                                                       Cornish ice-cream.....yum!

Day 7 Padstow
Friday, 16th May
Robyn writes: Our last day in Padstow - we got off to a lazy start; checking emails, Sandy called me on Skype for a chat, and Lex went off to the harbour to check if there were any cruises we could do. It was another glorious day - they forecast fog, but if it was foggy, we missed it - by 8am there was glorious blue sky once again! We lucked out with the cruises - we rang the one Lex had found on the internet but didn't get an answer on either number, and when we went to check out the 2 hour sea wildlife cruise from the harbour, discovered it would be 22.50 pounds each. I'm sure that's quite reasonable but we realised it would be nearly $100 Australian and would very much blow the budget for the day, so gave up that idea!

We went to the post office to get some bags to send some parcels to Australia and looked around the little shops that line the bay. I had my last Cornish pasty in Cornwall (from The Pasty Shop, not one of Rick's. Nice, but not quite as good as Rick's cheese and onion pasty.) The day was lovely and warm - the first time in England I've actually been able to wear cropped pants instead of the never-ending jeans I've been living in. Not to mention I cast off the joggers and wore my white Crocs sandals - so much better for the beach!

                                                      The ferry across the harbour

                                               Another glorious day in Cornwall!
Beautiful old church on the other side of the harbour

Instead of a cruise, we decided to take the ferry across to the little township of Rock on the other side of the river from Padstow - when it's high tide, the ferry berths in front of the Padstow harbour wall, but by the time we got there around lunch time, it was low tide and we had to walk out of town up and over the hill to the "Lower beach" to catch it from the beach itself! (It cost the bargain price of 3 pounds each return.) We got put down on the beach a half a mile out of Rock, and from there we walked away from town along the beach towards the little town of Portreath. We walked up the hill just outside town and along the walking trail towards Rock (a mile). A very nice walk through the dunes; we went past a lovely old medieval church on the way. When we got to Rock, we had lunch at the Blue Tomato Cafe right beside the beach (a huge pile of wedges and sweet potato chips!) We had a bit more of a walk around the little town then along the beach before taking the ferry back to Padstow (by then the tide was starting to come in and the Rock ferry was able to leave from their town beach but we still had to be put back on the Lower Beach here.)

Lex decided to go to the edge of town to check out a large monument we've seen on the horizon - turned out it was a Golden Jubilee memorial for Queen Victoria. I stayed home to go to the post office and start packing. Also finally got around to a last thing on my Cornwall "To Do" list: I had to try the local Cornwall ice-cream. Had some vanilla with clotted cream and strawberry ice-cream. Yum!  After he got home, we went up to our "local", the Golden Lion, for a drink before tea. Lex had a pint of the local beer, "Doombar", which was pretty ordinary, followed by a half of "Tintagel Gold", which he really enjoyed. (It's tough on him having to carry out this in-depth study of British ales in order to bring you his verdicts on them, but the man is totally selfless...) I had a fairly vicious glass of the house Sav Blanc! Then it was home for tea (delicious Tesco tortelloni - yum!) and more packing to try and get organised before we leave in the morning. Mind you, Friday night is my favourite night on British TV - Poirot followed by Lewis on ITV, so I'm quite happily parked in front of the telly!
