A special post for my Dunn relatives:
Robyn writes:  On our way to Bath from Padstow, the M5 took us right past two little villages which figure heavily in Dunn family history:

William Henry (Boyd's grandfather) was born in Sampford-Peverell and died in Mt Perry on Anzac Day, 1940.

William Henry's father, William, born 21.7.1840, married Eliza Robertson at Holberton on 24.12.1863, died 21.11.1923, Sampford Peverell.

His father, named Samuel, baptised 23.6.1811, married Sarah Ascott at Holberton on 10.12.1829, died 10.12.1843.

His father, also named Samuel, baptised 4.4.1779 married Betty Barton, at Trull on 6.6.1802.

His father, also named Samuel, baptised 25.2.1727, married Elizabeth Glass at Trull on 15.9.1765.

SAMPFORD - PEVERELL

The church in Sampford-Peverell: St John the Baptist Parish Church. It sits on the hillside between the upper town ('snob hill'!) and lower town. It is a beautiful old building, built in the mid 1200s.

The Dunn connection - a memorial to a Dunn killed in Egypt in World War 1. A 'rellie, Boyd?

TRULL

All-Saints Church - the tower, the oldest part of the church, dates to the late 1200s. The church has some of the most beautiful medieval carved wood I've ever seen! Sadly, none of the family names are visible here. In this climate, most gravestones are quickly unreadable and too worn to see who is buried there.

Beautiful old yew trees in the churchyard.

It also has an old set of stocks in the churchyard under a huge old yew tree.
They were last used in 1855 to punish and restrain a drunk who had disturbed
                                                                      church services!
